On 12 and 13 September 2024, Cool Roof has visited Public Places in Marseille, an association winner of our Call for proposals 2023.
This site insertion has been twofold :to
In collaboration with local associations and social enterprises, this project aims to improve both the social and environmental conditions of the northern districts of Marseille.
👉 In this article, you will discover how and why Cool Roof commits in this type of projects, the challenges faced by the local population, as well as the human stories are at the heart of this project. We will also discuss the technical issues of the cool roofing and the way in which these projects are involved in the fight against global warming and social inequality.
In 2023, the commitments to environmental and social Cool Roof have been rewarded : AXA us has been awarded the Prize Coup de Coeur when his Trophies CSR. Convinced that mutual assistance and cooperation can create a lasting impact, we have decided to donate the entire Prize CSR in a call-for-projects.
Our goal was to move these resources. So we have dedicated this call for projects in the associations of social utility affected by the precariousness heat of summer. By supporting organizations that work at the heart of their communities, we can provide thermal comfort to the most vulnerable, and thus reduce the social inequalities exacerbated by the heat of the summer. For us, climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is also an issue of solidarity and health of the people.
At the end of this call for projects, we have chosen to support two projects insertion with associations ADTP ESAT in Annecy and Public Places in Marseille during the summer of 2024. In the spring of 2025, Cool Roof will lead two other integration projects with associations Innovales TCEP in the Geneva and The Recycling Lorguaise in the Var. Following their selection, these associations receive a gift in the nature of the solution CoolRoof and an accompanying free on site.
Actor major cultural marseille, Public Places, hosts the national Arts Centre, the Street and Public Space. On an area of 36 000 square meters, Public Places offer a variety of services and spaces to street artists and their companies. Residence, education, creation…
But Public Places is not limited to culture ; it is also the focal point of the solidarity between the various communities in the northern Districts of the city. Today, he makes it his goal to open the building to the local population in order to provide them with the infrastructure and resources that are essential to the organization of social and cultural activities, such as a canteen, and a bakery collaborative.
Over the past ten years, the center has become an actor of the insertion and refolding of the city. The ecological restoration project of the Waterfall of the Aygalades in 2016 is a perfect example. This project, part of the program of urban renewal of Marseille, fruits since through activities, discovery process, and parties allowing the public to reinvest this historic place and to experience the beneficial impacts of water-courses in the city.
One of the major objectives of this insertion project was the creation of a cool island at the heart of the northern Districts of Marseille. In fact, this urban area heavily concreted suffers from the “urban heat island” (ICU). Despite these efforts, renaturation, the effect ICU continues to rage. Each year, people may have to cope with heat waves becoming longer and more intense, in habitats that are less and less able to handle peaks of heat.
Moreover, the northern Districts of Marseille perfectly illustrate the effect of urban heat island. This area, dense with buildings and concrete and a little green, record temperatures may be 5 to 10°C higher than the surrounding areas, especially in the summer. asphalt, roofs, concrete, and lack of green spaces amplify the heat, reducing the heat dissipation of the night. This phenomenon exacerbates socio-economic inequalities, local, since it strongly impacts the health of residents and their quality of life.
Located in these northern Districts, Public Places, is housed in large sheds, covered in sheets. It is especially the local climate, and more of its heat events more frequent.
The site of insertion is a preferred method for many of the actors of the social and solidarity economy. It allows you to reconcile social justice and economic value local. It is an effective way to encourage the public and private sectors and community to unite their forces and work for the people away from the job, to learn the job-seekers of long-term, workers with disabilities, young people under the age of 26 years, job seekers over the age of 50, etc…

Over the years, the integration projects are initiatives of more stable and durable. They are known for their strong social and economic potential in the long term. Many devices have been put in place to adjust to the needs of people more or less wrecked by the life and remote employment. In Cool Roof, we are working alongside ofassociations, small and intermediate, as well as with companies insertion subsidized to develop a true market social and solidarity in competitive sectors.
Whatever the form, the integration projects of Cool Roof and its partners are looking for ways to establish transfer of technical knowledge and know how to be professional. These projects are used to train and empower individuals and teams on a know-how on sustainable, innovative and technical. The idea is to convey key to access to the labour market. The participants of these projects have theopportunity to re-connect smoothly to the world of work, while contributing to a collective action that has a real impact on their community.

Similarly, the construction inclusive is not a foreign concept to Public Places. On the contrary, it’s been over 10 years since the Centre is implementing social missions, and in solidarity via its sites of insertion. As of 2016, their goal was to restore life to the Cascade of Aygalades, buried under waste. Dalso, cis from this project that the employees insertion in Public Places scall it “stunt”.
Today,today, Cool Roof accompanies Public Places in a new project : cool roofer 500 m2 of roof within the framework of their site of insertion.
On this site, we met with the participants whose course of life has been marked by conflict and accidents, and resilience in the face of these challenges. In Public Places, Gwendal has made to the knowledge of Harouna, Syed Ali and Samira. They are fixed-term contract of 2 years from Public Places, and are employees of the construction site in the insert.
Harouna is in mali and has survived the crossing of the Sahara and the Mediterranean. Syed Ali is a refugee policy of comoros. Samira is a key figure in his neighborhood. It sinvests as much on the construction site with his four children and her husband in the situation of disability. Each has its own trajectory and its challenges. Their common objective on the site of insertion is to be (re-)build socially and professionally. The principle of the construction site of insertion is to put the foot in the stirrup to return to work on the job market.
For Gwendal, this project is for Harouna, Said-Ali and Samira a way to “resume working hours and keep a pace with no prerequisite or performance objectives restrictive.” He also noted that the Public Places at the reverse of some of the projects insertion in mono-activity, is a site that is very rich and diverse, since the project encourages its participants to acquire new skills and technical knowledge to every project.” Indeed, rare are the sites of insertion where the employees make wooden stairs as the Aygalades orapply CoolRoof on the corrugated sheet.
An accident, it came quickly. And it can happen to us all. Road Accident, work, family problems, a decline in mental health and/or physical, but also economic crisis, political conflict, or armed… And when we can no longer have a socially considered “normal”, but that is n’t appear on the radar of the institutions working for the rehabilitation of individuals who might otherwise be marginalized, it can be difficult to find an appropriate accompaniment.
Fortunately, there are specialized structures in support of the integration through employment. To realize our values and desires for commitment, we have become active within the networks of insertion by the employment, in addition to the networks of the fight against insecurity heat. The Federation of social enterprises, the group Id ed, the CRESS, the building schools of the Île-de-France, the Compagnons Bâtisseurs… These alliances bring together associations, communities, public bodies and companies in the private sector.
They are essential to pursue the struggle for social justice and a transition to environmental considerations. It is thanks to them that emerges today the concept of“green jobs”. What are the jobs of the insert that goes in the direction of the transition ecological communities. A point of view and practical way, they allow the different stakeholders of the insertion by the use of the access more frequently to government grants, ensuring durability and stability of the people employed. The National Agency for Urban Renovation is a major player in these initiatives to Marseille via the project Marseille Urban Renewal, particularly focused on the Districts policies of the city.
once back from Marseille, Gwendal said he was delighted and inspired to have been able to accompany an association which provides a means of reconciling his transition from environmental to a strong social dimension” and and “in agreement with what she preaches and what it claims to be.”
For Public Places, this first project is a first step before tackling a project even wider. The final goal is to cover the 11 000 m2 of roofs of their local black sheet metal with the CoolRoof, where the summer heat is unbearable. This transition project environmental is funded by different public authorities. It is all the more necessary that Public Places aims to become a space of solidarity and mutual help to the people of the northern Districts of Marseille.
