Great news for Cool Roof ! We are finalists in the Million Cool Roofs Challenge

What is the Million Cool Roofs Challenge (MCRC) ?

Launched in 2019, the Million Cool Roofs Challenge (MCRC) is an international competition which aims to intensify the deployment of “cool roofs” (“roofs costs” in French) in developing countries.

Often located in climate zones with high temperatures, these countries are the first victims of global warming. In addition, access to cooling is not often generalized.

In order to deploy the technology of the cool roofing, 100 000 $ were awarded to 10 teams are selected folder. Among these teams, there are several organizations (NGOS, companies, research institutes, etc) specialized in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainable construction.

At the end of this contest, a staffing additional will be awarded to the team that has proposed the best solution to accelerate the implementation of roofs cool.

A finalist in the MCRC, Cool Roof, in association with UrbaSEN, #Elementerre and EMASOL, our mission is to demonstrate the impact of the coolroofing in the district of Wakhinane Nimzatt, to Dakar. With this project, Cool Roof intended to promote the appropriation of this technology by the senegalese.es while improving their comfort of life, and reducing their energy costs.

Why did you choose the Senegal ?

In Senegal, where temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, the issue is major. The high price of electricity (0,20 €/kWh) and the lack of insulation of buildings, real strainers thermal, are the cool interior of a luxury available only to the wealthy households, or to the activities that may absorb the cost.

In Dakar, the urban heat island multiply

In Dakar, as in the majority of cities, the increase of the temperature peaks related to climate change are, moreover, exacerbated by the effect of urban heat island.

The envelopes of the buildings, as well as the mineral surfaces, which absorb the solar flux, store the energy, to return it to the indoors, but also outdoors. Because of this, the concentration of the built environment creates a differential thermal material between the city and the countryside.

In the district of Wakhinane Nimzatt, the intensification of heat waves is particularly acute due to lack of space. To remedy this, Cool Roof France has covered the roofs of 17 buildings of its solution in a thermo-reflective.

Since the application of Cool Roof, many have been the beneficiaries to be able to re-use their roofs as a space of life.

Cool Roof France and its partners in action

With the health crisis, Cool Roof France was granted an extension cord so as to compensate for the inconvenience of this situation (suspension of the field missions, slowdown, construction sites, etc.). This envelope has been mobilized to help the health Centre Philippe Maguilène Senghor of Yoff and theEcole Polytechnique de Thiès.

Recognized for their expertise on scientific and technical, these buildings are strongly impacted by the peaks of heat in the dry season causing discomfort at work, degradation of the conditions of hospitality and learning, or deterioration of the air-conditioning equipment.

The application of Cool Roof will therefore permit :

  • An improvement of the thermal comfort of the occupants ;and
  • A reduction in the costs of air-conditioning ;
  • A reduction of energy and carbon footprint of buildings.
