In Cool Roof France, we aim to fight against precariousness heat of the summer, providing concrete solutions, and inclusive to protect the most vulnerable populations. Through our pole SSE-Solidarity, we act for social and environmental justice.

Summer overheating, a social issue… 🌡️

Heat waves are becoming increasingly frequent and particularly affect vulnerable people, especially the elderly, whose numbers are expected to double by 2050. Inequality in the face of heat waves is becoming a public health and social justice issue.

With increasing urbanization (70% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050), the consequences of heat waves will be even more pronounced.

Although heat waves account for only 1% of extreme weather events, they are responsible for the majority of deaths related to climate-related disasters.

Over the past 20 years, there has been a 30% increase in heat-related mortality. The phenomenon of "heat stress" causes 489,000 deaths worldwide each year (WHO data).

Observed and projected heat waves in France: hotter, longer, and earlier

Heat waves are intensifying, lengthening, and occurring earlier in France due to climate change. Since the 2000s, their frequency has increased significantly: 32 events have been recorded, compared to 17 between 1947 and 1999.

At +2.7°C by 2050, they could occur as early as June and last until mid-September. At +4°C, they could extend from mid-May to the end of September.

Inequalities facing the heat

The impact of urban heat islands 🌇

Vulnerable populations, particularly children, the elderly and vulnerable, and pregnant women, are the most vulnerable to heat waves. In cities, these populations experience heat waves that are intensified and prolonged by the effects of urbanization. This is the phenomenon of "urban heat islands."

And it is the most vulnerable populations who suffer the most. Access to air conditioning, an often inadequate and polluting solution, is more common among wealthy households. Urban heat islands primarily affect dense, concrete-covered working-class neighborhoods lacking green spaces.

That's why at Cool Roof, we are committed to combating summer heat poverty by combining social and environmental justice.

The inclusive Cool Roof, a social and territorial anchor

Cool Roof France is anchoring itself in its local communities by collaborating with economic integration organizations (SIAE). This opens up employment opportunities for people who are far removed from the labor market.

Our partnerships encourage the public, private, and non-profit sectors to join forces and take action for long-term job seekers, workers with disabilities, young people under 26, and job seekers over 50.

Thanks to employment integration, Cool Roof's inclusive projects allow SIAE employees to get back on their feet, while creating local economic and social added value.

Supporting the non-profit sector through patronage

One of Cool Roof's fundamental objectives is to share solutions and resources.

In 2023, Cool Roof's environmental and social commitments were recognized: AXA awarded us the Coup de Cœur Prize at its CSR Awards. Convinced that mutual aid and cooperation can create a lasting impact, we decided to donate the entire proceeds of this CSR Prize to a call for projects.

Since 2024, five associations have benefited from our cool roofing solutions, as well as technical support for volunteers and employees involved in the employment integration program.

Shares non-profit

Among our non-profit initiatives, we are developing the CoolMakers project based on our DIY CoolRoof formula, made with natural products. For €1 to €2/m², you can ensure thermal comfort for the entire summer season.

We also encourage awareness of coolroofing, particularly among people in precarious situations, by setting up participatory projects in social centers or forms of precarious housing that are very affected by the summer heat.

By joining the Positive Energy Territories Network in 2023, Cool Roof is collaborating with the Cler network and local authorities on energy efficiency projects and the fight against heat islands.

Stop energy exclusion

Winner of the Energy Poverty Solutions Trophy in the “Innovation” category in 2024, it is only logical that Cool Roof has decided to deepen its commitment to the Stop Energy Exclusion network in 2025.
